Thundercut invades Rotterdam

At CBK we can see the amazing installation by Thundercut from NYC. They made a whole lot of little sculptures, called "fridge friends" covering two fridges. Because the "Fridge Friends" are so popular Thundercut wants to give you the opportunity to find some friends in the city. This friday night we will hide a box full of friends in the city. If you are lucky you will find some, which you can take home with you.

Who are the Fridge Friends?

The Fridge Friends are both normal and unique, they represent you, they
represent your friends. Each Fridge Friend is an original and not two
are ever alike. They spend there time on your fridge to because there
they will see you at least once a day, and hopefully they will see you
more. They are there in the morning for breakfast when you wake up,
they are there in the afternoon for lunch, in the evening for dinner,
and all day for the occasional snack or stock evaluation. Every time
you see your friends they hope to make you smile.

The sculpture of the homeless guy sitting out the front of the CBK in Rotterdam is a bit of a sensation for the people walking past. Cops keep sending him away unsuccesfully and other homeless continuesly join him on the street. Now the media has picked up on him and there was an article in AD (rotterdam) newspaper today and tonight he will be on national television. Check him out at 22:30 RTL4 (4 in het land). Next to the saturday program there is a sunday program featuring the “Quatsi” by Godfrey Reggio. The apocalyptic “QUATSI” trilogy of writer/director Godfrey Reggio is simply one of the most impressive visual and auditive spectacles ever made. With a brilliant musical score by award winning composer Philip Glass. The QATSI Trilogy will stand as a cinematic utterance to an untellable event – the technological transformation of the planet.

KOYAANISQATSI

Life out of balance

Reggio's debut as a film director and producer, is the first film of the QATSI trilogy. The title is a Hopi Indian word meaning "life out of balance." Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds -- urban life and technology versus the environment. The musical score was composed by Philip Glass. (87 min.)

POWAQQATSI

Life in transformation

POWAQQATSI's overall focus is on natives of the Third World -- the emerging, land-based cultures of Asia, India, Africa, the Middle East and South America -- and how they express themselves through work and traditions. What it has to say about these cultures is an eyeful and then some, sculpted to allow for varied interpretations. (97 min.)

Life as war

More important than empires, more powerful than world religions, more decisive than great battles, more impactful than cataclysmic earth changes, NAQOYQATSI chronicles the most significant event of the last five thousand years: the transition from the natural milieu, old nature, to the "new" nature, the technological milieu. Gyz la Riviere

Alexandre Orion

Next to Owen Phillips (see underneath) there is also an opening of Pisa73 and Evol at MOOSE. They are two amazing stencil artists from Berlin, who were here before for the Sneaker; fresh still life exhibition at CBK two years ago. Opening is at 20:00 at MOOSE, Haringvliet 619.

Owen Phillips this weekend at Witte de With

This weekend British artists Owen Phillips will create cardboard sculptures along the bridge at the witte de with street for the anual W de W festival. You can see his sculptures friday till sunday.

TXTHEALING performance by Paul Notzold

Paul Notzold is an artists from New York. During the opening at the 1st of september he will give a performance called TXThealing.

Using 'always on' technology, cell phones with SMS messaging allow an audience to interact with large speech bubbles projected onto a flat surface, like the facade of a building. The bubbles are positioned near windows and doors to encourage an audience to create the conversations happening inside. The public audience receives a flyer with a cell number and simple instructions. A participant sends a text message to the provided phone number and it is then displayed inside the speech bubble. Multiple bubbles may be used and the audience can direct their input to a specific bubble.

The piece explores the use of mobile technology to trigger dialogue, action and create content for a staged public performance. By using the facade of a building the intention is to engage an audience to think about the physical spaces we move through, live in and share. I'm trying to address public vs. private space and what kind of dialogue might transpire if we shared out private thoughts. The piece was designed to encourage play, idea sharing, thought, discourse, and entertainment.

Introducing Mark Jenkins

We have started today building the exhibion. Tomorrow we pick up mark jenkins, Paul Notzold and Alexandre Orion some of the international artists participating in the project. Mark Jenkins makes really great sculptures. He will be making some for outdoors along the Binnenweg and also some sculptures for indoors in the exhibition. Here are some movies 1 and 2 to show you how people respond to them. Here is also a movie about how these sculptures are made.
